Padres Topple Mariners 16-1 in Series Opener

The San Diego Padres defeated the Seattle Mariners 16-1 in the opening game of their weekend series. They're playing the series at Petco Park, in down town San Diego.

TEAM R | H | E

SEA 1 | 4 | 0

SD 16 | 17 | 0

The first pitch was at 7:11pm PST. The limited capacity attendance recorded was 15,250. Pitchers of record were W: Chris Paddack (SD - 2-3) and L: Chris Flexen (SEA - 4-2).

Major notes:

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit the 50th home run of his career, bringing him to 11 HRs on the year... The Padres hit 3 home runs total (Trent Grisham [6]; Fernando Tatis Jr.[11]; Jake Cronenworth [5])... Padres scored 8 of their runs in the first 2 innings.

After scoring eight earned runs off of Chris Flexen (SEA - SP), the Padres were able to pretty much put the game into cruise control. Avoiding another losing outing, the San Diego bats were able to provide Chris Paddack (SD - SP) with some major run support. This has been a common trend that both fans of the Padres AND the friar's starting pitching has got to be enjoying.

Grisham, Tatis Jr. & Cronenworth all went deep in this winning effort and the three combined for 10 RBI's total. Albeit they weren't grand slams... The return to Slam Diego, perhaps? Either way, the Padres bats have DEFINITELY woken up.

Every position player in the starting lineup was able to conjure up at least one hit tonight, with all but Jurickson Profar (SD - RF) getting 2 or more hits each.

This one was on cruise control after the 2nd inning finished, but the Padres shouldn't expect to have it THAT easy with the Mariners this weekend. Although, Seattle has been no-hit twice this month...

Nonetheless, the Padres are on a definite hot streak right now with everything clicking. Having scored 5+ runs 8 of their last 11 games, the Padres are currently on a seven game winning streak. In fact, San Diego has actually won 10 of their last 11 games, including sweeps in their last two series over the St. Louis Cardinals & the Colorado Rockies. All of this- and a Dodger victory Friday night in San Fran- has led to the Padres being tied with the San Francisco Giants for 1st place, atop the NL West.

Saturday night's game at Petco Park is scheduled for 5:40pm PST. Probable starters are Justus Sheffield (LHP 3-3) for Seattle, and Ryan Weathers (LHP 2-1) for San Diego.
